Performance Summary

The MSI Katana B14WGK-016US runs on the Intel Core i9 14900HX with 8P+16E cores, posting a PassMark multi-thread score of 45,235. That places it ahead of 82% of the 101 laptops in our database. This is genuine workstation-class throughput: heavy compiles, batch exports and simulation all run comfortably.

Display

You get a 15.6″ IPS panel at 2560x1600 (194 PPI) refreshing at 165 Hz. The high refresh rate makes motion — from scrolling to shooters — feel immediately smoother than any 60 Hz panel. Explore competing high-frame-rate options in our 144Hz+ high-refresh laptops.

Gaming Performance

With the RTX 5070 (20,472 G3DMark), the Katana B14WGK-016US scores 6.6/10 for gaming. Modern AAA titles run at high settings in 1080p/1440p, and esports titles will saturate the display’s refresh rate. The 165 Hz panel means the GPU’s frames actually reach your eyes. You can track its gaming index score in our curated best gaming laptops.

Productivity

For office and productivity work the Katana B14WGK-016US scores 6.1/10. 32 GB of DDR5 memory keeps large spreadsheets, dozens of tabs and video calls running simultaneously without paging. The 1 TB SSD keeps boots and file operations fast.

Programming

Developers should expect a 6.3/10 experience. Core count is limited — fine for scripting and web work, slow for big compiles. The taller 16:10-class screen shows meaningfully more code per screenful. Upgradeable RAM means you can start smaller and expand later.

Video Editing

The RTX 5070 accelerates timeline playback, effects and export encoding. For color-critical delivery, plan on an external calibrated monitor.

3D Rendering & Engineering

3D and engineering workloads score 6.6/10. Viewport manipulation in CAD/DCC apps stays fluid, and GPU renders (Blender Cycles, V-Ray GPU) are well within reach.

Battery

Battery specifics aren’t listed in our source data, so treat this as guidance: gaming-class hardware prioritizes performance; expect moderate unplugged endurance and pack the charger for long days.

Upgradeability

RAM is socketed and user-upgradeable beyond the included 32 GB — a big longevity win. Storage is M.2 SSD-based, typically replaceable for capacity upgrades.

Heat & Noise

With high-wattage discrete graphics inside this chassis, the added thickness buys real thermal headroom; noise under load should stay reasonable.

Port Selection

Port selection isn’t enumerated in our source sheet, but as a gaming laptop in the 15.6″ class, expect a full loadout: multiple USB-A, USB-C, HDMI 2.1 and Ethernet on most gaming designs. Verify the exact loadout on the Amazon listing before buying.

Value for Money

In the Under $2500 category, the value score is 8.1/10. That is exceptional performance-per-dollar — this configuration undercuts most rivals with similar benchmarks.
